Breast Cancer Initiative East Africa Inc. Logo
|
Helping... Awareness, Education, Screening, Treatment and Research. The BCIEAInc. Logo is pink in harmony with the universal fight against breast cancer marked by the well known pink ribbon. It also symbolizes the African woman who is ever busy, on the move, providing for her family and has no time for her own needs. She is at the forefront of the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of her family. She is the backbone of her society in which she toils and strives to meet the needs of her children and the whims and desires of her husband. She is far too busy to afford time off to think about her own needs. Sick leave is not an option – who else will meet the needs of her family? She is afraid to express her weakness because this makes her vulnerably replaceable – “what about my children?” constantly haunts her and any aches or discomforts she may feel must be dismissed. Her socio-economic status does not include any type of health care insurance, so why bother trying to find out “what is wrong with me when there is nothing I can do about it?” She laments. Her situation is compounded by the fact that there are few ill-equipped health clinics in the rural area where she lives, so even if she visited the clinic nothing much would be done to help her. This woman must be rescued from her dilemma. She must learn to take charge of her health. She must be empowered to change so that she can enhance her role as the backbone and anchor of her society. When you see her, please remember what
Ben Franklin said, “An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.” Who will help her?
